DESCRIPTION

Studio ESEM (formerly Esem Projects) were invited by HASSELL to work with Sydney Airport Corporation in the development of a public art plan attached to the redevelopment of the T2/T3 Domestic Airport precinct. This extended into a Heritage Interpretation Strategy for the Qantas Hangar.

The Art Plan created a strategic framework through which to plan and deliver artworks across the Sydney Airport Domestic Terminal public domain as part of a major redevelopment of the T2/T3 precincts. Incorporated into the Plan was analysis of contemporary public art typologies incorporating permanent, programmable and temporary public artworks.

The Plan also ensured Sydney Airport Corporation Limited (SACL) was equipped with an appropriate governance framework through which to curate and invest in public art over time, and aligned programming and activation strategies around key events in Sydney's arts and culture calendar.

Studio ESEM were subsequently invited to support the SACL in the creation of a set of interpretation concepts for the Mill Pond, a site of great heritage significance due to its role in the development of Sydney’s water supply in the early years of Sydney’s settlement as a British colony. ESEM invited industrial designers Tilt to create a set of creative concepts for the Mill Pond visitor experience as part of a wider interpretation program planned for the Sydney Airport Bicentenary. Sadly, the work did not proceed due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
